Prof. Leuthold wurde wurde 1966 in der Schweiz geboren und studierte an der Eidgenössischen Technischen Hochschule (ETH) in Zürich Physik. Anschliessend promovierte er an der ETH auf dem Gebiet der optischen Kommunikationstechnik. Von 1999 bis 2004 arbeitete er bei den Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies in Holmdel, USA, auf dem Gebiet der optischen Bauteile und Systemforschung mit Schwerpunkt Hochgeschwindigkeits-Telekommunikation. Seit Juli 2004 ist er ordentlicher Professor am Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT) und leitet das Institut für Photonik und Quantenelektronik.
